John LeRoy Hennessy is a computer scientist and academic administrator widely regarded as one of the founding figures of modern Silicon Valley technology. He was President of Stanford University from 2000 to 2016, the longest-serving Stanford president in modern history. As a Stanford computer science professor, he co-developed the RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) architecture that underpins virtually all modern microprocessors and founded MIPS Computer Systems in 1984.

Hennessy received the Turing Award — computing’s equivalent of the Nobel Prize — in 2017 (jointly with David Patterson).
