People willing to work for a president with NPD would likely fall into several distinct categories, each with different motivations:
True believers would see the leader’s confidence and grandiosity as strength and vision rather than pathology. They might genuinely share the leader’s worldview and be willing to overlook problematic behaviors because they believe in the broader mission or policy goals.
Opportunists and climbers would recognize that the leader’s need for flattery and loyalty creates opportunities for advancement. Those skilled at managing up and providing the constant validation such leaders crave could gain significant influence and access despite limited qualifications. The high turnover would create regular openings for ambitious people willing to play the game.
Ideologues focused on specific policy outcomes might view working for such a president as a means to an end—accepting the difficult working conditions as the price for advancing their particular agenda, whether regulatory rollback, judicial appointments, or other goals.
Family members and long-time associates would have pre-existing relationships and might feel trapped by loyalty, financial dependence, or simply be so acclimated to the dysfunction that it seems normal to them.
Enablers and fixers who specialize in managing chaotic environments might be drawn to the challenge. Some people thrive in crisis management roles and cleaning up messes, finding purpose in being indispensable.
People with limited options might need the resume credential or be at career stages where they feel they can’t afford to turn down a White House position, even knowing the environment will be difficult.
Those with complementary pathologies might be comfortable in the dysfunction—people with their own narcissistic traits, yes-men who lack independent judgment, or those who’ve learned to cope with similar dynamics in their personal lives.
The common thread would be either genuine alignment with the leader’s vision, ability to rationalize or compartmentalize the problematic behaviors, or seeing the position as valuable enough to tolerate a toxic work environment temporarily.
