For Trump Supporters: Questions Worth Considering

Karl Rove spent decades as one of the most effective Republican operatives in the country. He ran George W. Bush’s campaigns. He ran the Swift Boat campaign against John Kerry. He is not someone whose Republican credentials are in question. After January 6, he called the rioters “thugs” rather than “hostages,” published a Wall Street Journal column urging Republicans to stop echoing Trump’s election claims, told Trump directly “you didn’t win, you aren’t president of the United States,” and advised Democrats to attack Trump hard on his pardon promises. His history includes aggressive tactics that critics have called corrosive — he is not a hero of democratic norms. But on the specific question of whether the 2020 election was stolen and whether January 6 was legitimate protest, Rove applied the same standard he’d apply to any other situation.

Here’s a question worth sitting with: Rove is a lifelong Republican strategist who spent his career getting Republican candidates elected. He had every political incentive to go along with the fraud narrative — it would have kept him in good standing with the base. Instead, he publicly, repeatedly, and specifically rejected it. What does it tell you when one of the most experienced Republican strategists in the country looks at the same claims you’ve been presented with and says they aren’t true? What does he know that leads him to that conclusion, and what would it take for you to find out whether he’s right?

A second question: Rove’s history includes political tactics — Swift Boating, Plame leak proximity, voter targeting operations — that many people across the political spectrum consider ethically troubling. He is not a clean figure. But here he is saying the election wasn’t stolen and the rioters were thugs. The question of whether someone is right on a specific factual point is separate from whether they’re a good person. Can you evaluate what Rove is saying about January 6 independently of your broader opinion of him?
