Hector Garcia-Molina (1951–2019) was the Leonard Bosack and Sandy Lerner Professor in the Departments of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at Stanford University and a pioneer in the field of database systems. He served as Chair of Stanford’s Computer Science Department. His research contributions included work on distributed databases, data integration, web search, and information retrieval — foundational areas for the modern internet and enterprise data management. Garcia-Molina served as an Oracle independent director from 2001 until his death in August 2019, contributing deep computer science and database expertise to the board of the world’s largest database software company. He is considered one of the most influential database researchers of the 20th and early 21st centuries.
