For Trump Supporters: Questions Worth Considering

The Mueller investigation documented that Sanders told reporters that “countless” FBI agents had lost confidence in James Comey — and then admitted to investigators that she had said this without evidence. As Arkansas governor, she signed the Defense Against Criminal Illegals Act mandating that all Arkansas law enforcement agencies participate in the 287(g) program — making it one of the few states to require, by law, that local police act as de facto federal immigration agents. She deployed the Arkansas National Guard for interior immigration enforcement, not just border operations. She is widely discussed as a potential 2028 presidential candidate.

Here’s a question worth sitting with: The 287(g) program Sanders mandated applies to all Arkansas law enforcement agencies — city police, county sheriffs, and state law enforcement must now screen people they encounter for immigration status. The original purpose of local police is to enforce local and state law — traffic, crime, public safety — for the community they serve. When local police are required to act as immigration enforcement agents, the relationship between immigrant communities and local law enforcement changes: people who fear deportation stop calling the police when they are victims of crime, stop reporting crimes they witness, and avoid contact with law enforcement. This makes local communities less safe. A victim of crime who won’t call the police because they fear deportation is a public safety problem that harms everyone in the community. If mandatory 287(g) participation makes immigrant communities less likely to cooperate with local police — does that trade-off serve the communities Arkansas law enforcement is supposed to protect?

A second question: Sanders was Trump’s Press Secretary during 2017–2019 — a role in which she made documented false statements from the White House podium, admitted to investigators she made claims without evidence, and participated in multiple documented press freedom incidents including barring reporters from briefings and suspending press credentials. If you hold public officials to a truth-telling standard — the standard that the person standing at a government podium should say things that are factually true — does the documented record of Sanders’s White House statements meet that standard?
