Voter Registration

Notes: New Hampshire has same-day voter registration at polling locations on Election Day. You must provide proof of identity, age, U.S. citizenship, and domicile (primary residence) to register. A federal court struck down the state’s proof of citizenship law in May 2026. There is no minimum residency requirement – you can establish voting domicile on or just prior to Election Day.

Notes: Birth records since 1935 available from any city/town clerk in NH running NHVRINplus software. Records before 1935 only available from town where birth occurred. Photo ID required. NH is a closed record state – only certain individuals have access.

How to Obtain Citizenship Proof

For US birth certificate: Contact vital records office in state of birth. For passport: Apply through US State Department with Form DS-11, provide citizenship proof, pay fees (over $100). For naturalization certificate replacement: Submit Form N-565 to USCIS with required fee. For certificate of citizenship: Submit Form N-600 to USCIS if born outside US to US citizen parents. Beginning July 7, 2026, indigent citizens can receive vouchers to cover cost of obtaining birth certificate or equivalent proof.

For US Citizens Abroad

US citizens abroad can obtain proof through US consular services for consular report of birth abroad, or apply for US passport through nearest US embassy or consulate.

Notes: Federal court ruled New Hampshire’s documentary proof requirement unconstitutional in May 2026, allowing qualified voter affidavit as alternative. Law was scheduled to take effect after 2024 election but is currently blocked.
