For Trump Supporters: Questions Worth Considering

Sidney Powell was a former federal prosecutor who wrote a book (Licensed to Lie, 2014) criticizing government prosecutors for making false statements and suppressing evidence in high-profile cases.

In November 2020, she held a press conference at RNC headquarters alleging that Dominion Voting Systems was a Venezuelan government-controlled operation, that Hugo Chavez (who had died in 2013) had designed it to flip votes, and that Cuba and China were also involved. The Trump campaign formally distanced itself from her three days later.

In December 2020, she was in an Oval Office meeting where she and Mike Flynn proposed that Trump declare martial law, seize voting machines by military force, and appoint Powell as Special Counsel for election fraud. White House counsel pushed back. In October 2023, she pleaded guilty to six misdemeanor counts of conspiracy to commit election fraud in Georgia. Dominion Voting Systems has a $1.3 billion defamation lawsuit pending against her; Smartmatic has another.

Here’s a question worth sitting with: Powell wrote an entire book about the dangers of government officials making false statements and suppressing evidence.

She had made her reputation arguing that prosecutors should be held to rigorous standards of accuracy and honesty. She then made public allegations — that Hugo Chavez’s ghost somehow controlled American voting machines, that Venezuela and Cuba had coordinated to steal the American election — that were not just unsupported but factually impossible.

Courts imposed sanctions on her. The Trump campaign itself said she was too extreme. She has since pleaded guilty to election fraud conspiracy.

What does it tell you about the “Stop the Steal” operation that one of its principal architects has a guilty plea, multi-billion-dollar defamation judgments pending, and the specific claim that a dead Venezuelan president stole the election?

A second question: Powell’s “Defending Republic Inc.” fundraising operation raised substantial money from Trump supporters on the strength of her election-fraud claims — money used in part for her legal defense.

The people who donated believed her claims were true. She has since pleaded guilty, acknowledging what she did was criminal. Those donors’ money went to defending someone who was, as she has admitted, engaged in criminal conduct to spread false election claims.
