Why Baselines Matter

Any analytical claim about Trump’s speech (volume, repetition, complexity, marker prevalence) is hard to interpret in isolation. Comparative baselines provide perspective:

• A “high lexical diversity” claim is meaningless without comparison
• A “frequent enemy-construction” claim requires comparison to other speakers in similar contexts
• A “trajectory of change” claim requires comparison to expected within-speaker variation
• A “concerning pattern” claim requires comparison to historical norms

This file specifies the standard comparative baselines for the speech corpus.

Within-Speaker Baselines (Trump time-stratification)

Compare Trump-2025 to Trump’s own historical speech:

For trajectory analysis: compare equivalent genres across eras (e.g., Trump 2016 rallies vs Trump 2025 rallies; do not pool rallies with executive orders).

Cohort Baselines (Same Office, Different Speaker)

Compare Trump’s official speech to predecessors and contemporaries in similar roles:

Within the cohort, compare:

• Same genre (presidential rallies vs presidential rallies; Inaugural vs Inaugural)
• Same audience (general election rallies; presidential interviews)
• Same time period (2016 primary debates vs 2016 primary debates)

Movement Baselines (2024 GOP Primary Cohort)

Cohort use: in the same primary cycle, with similar genres (rallies, debates, interviews), the GOP-cohort baseline shows what is/isn’t typical for the movement.

International Baselines (Illiberal-Leaning Leaders)

For comparative authoritarianism analysis, compare Trump to other contemporary leaders showing illiberal tendencies (in their available English-translated speech where applicable):

Comparative use: rhetorical-marker prevalence; truth-density; enemy construction; comparative-political-science research grounding.

Historical Baselines (Demagogues and Authoritarian Rhetoric)

For historical depth, compare to (where corpora exist):

Use these baselines carefully: historical context is different; analogies must be precise; avoid lazy “X is Hitler” comparison framing. The Levitsky-Ziblatt and Stanley analytical frames provide clearer methodologies than direct historical analog.

Genre-Stratified Comparisons

When making any comparative claim, stratify by genre:

Stratification matters: many “Trump is unusual” claims become more or less so depending on genre.

Metric-Specific Baseline Selection

For specific metric questions, select the most-relevant baseline:

Baseline Maintenance

• Refresh schedule: Quarterly review of baseline corpora completeness
• Coverage gaps: Document gaps; for any analytical claim, note which baselines are unavailable
• Translation handling: For non-English baselines, document whether comparison is on translated or original text; lexical-feature comparison is unreliable across translations
• Genre coverage: Track which genres are well-represented in each baseline corpus
