Goal

Narrow where a photo was taken using public visual clues — with explicit uncertainty.

Steps

1. List fixed objects: signage language, road markings, vegetation, architecture, power poles.
2. Check EXIF only if you have lawful possession of the file; strip before republishing others’ images.
3. Use sun angle / shadows only as a weak hint unless you can calibrate date/time.
4. Compare candidates in Street-level imagery where licensed and lawful.
5. State a confidence band (city vs neighborhood vs country).
6. If used in a published claim, label (estimated) per ITI inferred-data policy.

Pitfalls

• Lookalike cities and franchise architecture.
• Deepfakes and synthetic backgrounds — pair with provenance checks.
