Tutorial — Reverse image search workflow
Skill: media-verification-specialist
Time: ~15 minutes
Goal
Determine whether an image is original, recycled, or mislabeled in time or place.
Steps
- Save a copy of the image with hash (SHA-256) for your log.
- Run Google Images search by image and TinEye.
- Sort results by oldest first when the UI allows.
- Open earliest credible source; record date and context.
- If image is cropped, try uncropped variants or adjacent frames from video.
- Document unknowns (e.g. first appearance not found).
Pitfalls
- Stock photos reused legitimately.
- Mirrored or filtered images may reduce match quality.
