Paul Gosar posted an anime video depicting himself killing Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez with a sword and attacking President Biden. The House voted 223-207 to censure him — only two Republicans, Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, voted for censure. He was stripped of his committees. Then he spoke at Nick Fuentes’s America First Political Action Conference — a white nationalist event — in 2021 and again in 2022 via pre-recorded video. Kevin McCarthy criticized the appearances but promised to restore Gosar’s committees if Republicans won the majority. Republicans won. McCarthy restored Gosar’s committees. He has continued to serve without further consequence.

Here’s a question worth sitting with: A sitting member of Congress posted a video depicting himself murdering a female colleague with a sword. The House censured him in a bipartisan vote. 205 of his Republican colleagues voted against the censure — choosing not to find that even a fantasy depiction of killing a colleague crosses a line. That is a choice those 205 members made. What does it tell you about the standards of the party you support that 205 of its House members voted to say that was acceptable conduct for a congressman?

A second question about the white nationalist conferences: Fuentes’s AFPAC is a documented white nationalist gathering. Gosar spoke there while serving in Congress, returned the following year, and faced no consequence that mattered — he got his committees back. CNN documented his ties to Holocaust denial websites and neo-Nazi adjacency over multiple years. If a Democratic congressman had repeatedly spoken at conferences organized by a prominent black nationalist or antisemitic figure, would you expect that to end their career? Apply the same standard to Gosar’s documented ties to white nationalist networks. The question isn’t about which side is “worse” — it’s about whether you hold both sides to the same principle.
