Assassination (September 10, 2025)

The Shooting

On Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at approximately 12:23 p.m. Mountain Time, Charlie Kirk was struck by a single rifle round while addressing an outdoor crowd at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. The event was the opening stop of TPUSA’s “American Comeback Tour,” held in the UVU Fountain Courtyard with Kirk speaking near a “Prove Me Wrong” debate tent. According to ABC News’ visual timeline, Kirk was debating an audience member about transgender people and mass shootings at the moment he was hit.

The Utah Department of Public Safety reported that approximately 3,000 people were in attendance — more than five times the 600 attendees the university’s event-planning records had anticipated. Six UVU police officers were assigned to the event, in addition to Kirk’s private security detail.

Kirk was transported to Timpanogos Regional Hospital and pronounced dead hours later.

Official Characterization

At a September 10, 2025 press conference at the Keller Building on the UVU campus, Utah Governor Spencer Cox stated: “This is a dark day for our state. It’s a tragic day for our nation… I want to be very clear this is a political assassination.” FBI press materials refer to the incident as “the murder of Charlie Kirk.”

Shooter and Manhunt

According to Utah Department of Public Safety briefings and an ABC News timeline reconstruction, the suspect arrived on the UVU campus at 8:29 a.m. on September 10, 2025 driving a gray Dodge Challenger, changed into dark clothing on campus, climbed to the rooftop of an adjacent building, fired the fatal shot, jumped from the roof, and fled into a nearby neighborhood. Investigators recovered a rifle, ammunition, shoe impressions, a forearm imprint, and a palm print from the rooftop and surrounding wooded area.

After a manhunt lasting more than 30 hours, Tyler James Robinson, 22, of Utah, surrendered to authorities accompanied by his father and a family friend. Two individuals — George Zinn and Zachariah Qureshi — were initially detained and subsequently cleared of any connection to the shooting; Zinn was separately charged by UVU police with obstruction.

Criminal Charges

Less than a week after the shooting, the Utah County Attorney’s Office filed a seven-count Information against Tyler James Robinson. According to the charging document (Utah County Attorney’s Office, State v. Tyler James Robinson), the counts are:

  1. Aggravated Murder (capital felony), Utah Code § 76-5-202, for intentionally or knowingly causing the death of Charlie Kirk while knowingly creating a great risk of death to others present.
  2. Felony Discharge of a Firearm Causing Serious Bodily Injury.
  3. Obstruction of Justice (second-degree felony), Utah Code § 76-8-306(2), pertaining to concealment of the rifle.
  4. Obstruction of Justice (second-degree felony), pertaining to concealment of the clothing worn during the shooting.
  5. Tampering with a Witness (third-degree felony), Utah Code § 76-8-508, pertaining to a statement directing his roommate to delete a text exchange.
  6. Tampering with a Witness (third-degree felony), pertaining to a statement directing his roommate to invoke a right to counsel and remain silent if questioned by police.
  7. Violent Offense Committed in the Presence of a Child, pertaining to the shooting taking place where children under 14 were visible at the event.

The charging document also includes a Victim Targeting Enhancement under Utah Code § 76-3-203.14(2), alleging that Robinson “intentionally selected Charlie Kirk because of … [his] belief or perception regarding Charlie Kirk’s political expression.”

Prosecutors have announced intent to seek the death penalty. According to court records, DNA consistent with Robinson’s was identified on the trigger of the rifle, the fired cartridge casing, two unfired cartridges, and a towel used to wrap the rifle.

Procedural Posture (as of June 2026)

Robinson has not entered a plea. A trial date has not been set. His preliminary hearing was originally scheduled for May 2026 and was postponed at the defense’s request after Judge Tony Graf granted additional time to examine DNA and ballistics evidence; it is currently scheduled for July 6–10, 2026. Pretrial motions to date have addressed cameras in the courtroom (the judge declined to ban broadcast coverage), defense motions to disqualify prosecutors (denied), defense motions to seal portions of the preliminary hearing, and defense requests to appear in civilian clothing without visible restraints. Allegations and unproven characterizations from court filings — including a defense filing referencing ATF ballistics findings — remain contested and have not been adjudicated.

For Trump Supporters: Questions Worth Considering

Kirk founded Turning Point USA at 18, built it into the largest conservative youth organizing infrastructure in the country, and used it to support “Stop the Steal” rally infrastructure after the 2020 election. TPAction — the 501(c)(4) arm — coordinated with the Trump campaign in 2020 and 2024. Kirk’s stated goal is to build a Christian-nationalist youth movement: he launched Turning Point Faith specifically as the Christian-nationalist outreach arm of the TPUSA ecosystem.

Here’s a question worth sitting with: Kirk has publicly stated goals that go beyond politics and into governance of private life — his Christian nationalist framework envisions a United States governed by Christian principles, including in areas of education, family law, and civil society. This is a clear ideological position that he has articulated directly and consistently. If you share Kirk’s Christian nationalist framework, this profile documents what he is building toward. If you support a conservative political agenda but hold a pluralist view — that the United States is a country for citizens of all religions and no religion — then Kirk’s vision is worth examining carefully, because it is not pluralist conservatism.
