Biographical Overview

Roger W. Ferguson Jr. served as President and CEO of TIAA (Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association of America) from 2008 to 2021, overseeing the retirement savings of approximately five million teachers, professors, and nonprofit workers. Before TIAA, he served as Vice Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System from 1999 to 2006 under both Presidents Clinton and George W. Bush — making him one of the most senior Black federal officials in U.S. financial regulatory history. He was the only Fed governor in Washington on September 11, 2001, and led the Fed’s initial response to the attacks.

After the Fed, Ferguson was a partner at McKinsey & Company’s financial services practice. His concurrent role at Red Cell Partners (a defense and national security venture firm) provides an additional dimension of interest given Alphabet’s significant government AI contracts through Google Cloud.

He holds an A.B., Ph.D. in Economics, and J.D., all from Harvard University.
