For Trump Supporters: Questions Worth Considering

Huckabee was appointed U.S. Ambassador to Israel — the United States’ most politically fraught bilateral relationship. He is a Christian-Zionist minister who has supported full Israeli annexation of the West Bank and coordinates with figures in Israeli right-wing politics including Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir — politicians who have been sanctioned by other Western governments and whose positions on Palestinian rights have drawn international condemnation. The U.S. ambassador to Israel is supposed to represent American foreign policy interests; Huckabee’s personal theological and political commitments to Israel predate and appear to exceed his representational role.

Here’s a question worth sitting with: An ambassador to a foreign country is supposed to represent U.S. interests in that country — not personal, religious, or political commitments the ambassador held before the appointment. Huckabee’s Christian-Zionist theology holds that Israel’s full control of its biblical lands is theologically necessary — a position he has held publicly for decades. This is a sincerely held religious belief. But the U.S. has official policy positions on Israeli-Palestinian questions — including on settlements, annexation, and Palestinian statehood — that have been maintained across Republican and Democratic administrations. When an ambassador’s personal theological commitments align more closely with the policies of the receiving government than with U.S. official positions, who is that ambassador actually representing?

A second question: Huckabee’s profile also reflects a family political dynasty that overlaps with the Trump administration: his daughter Sarah Huckabee Sanders is the Governor of Arkansas; he himself was appointed ambassador by Trump after years as a Fox News and TBN personality and Trump advocate. Multiple members of the Huckabee family hold or held significant Trump administration or Trump-aligned positions simultaneously. This is not illegal or unprecedented in American politics — many families have served simultaneously in politics. But if you believe public officials should be selected on the basis of qualification and independent judgment — what standard governs appointments that come after years of visible public loyalty to the appointing president, and how do you distinguish between merit-based appointment and loyalty-reward appointment?
