Ted Cruz graduated magna cum laude from Princeton and magna cum laude from Harvard Law, clerked for Chief Justice William Rehnquist, and was Texas Solicitor General. He knows constitutional law as well as almost anyone in the United States Senate. During the 2016 Republican primary, he called Trump a “sniveling coward,” a “pathological liar,” “utterly amoral,” and “a serial philanderer.” Trump responded by running a photo of Cruz’s wife next to a glamour shot of Melania with the caption “The images are worth a thousand words,” and by claiming Cruz’s father had been involved in the Kennedy assassination. Cruz then became one of Trump’s most publicly deferential allies. On January 6, 2021, after the Capitol had been breached, after the attack, after the reconvening — Cruz was one of six senators who voted to object to Arizona’s electoral certification anyway.
