For Trump Supporters: Questions Worth Considering

Andrew Hitt was the Chairman of the Wisconsin Republican Party. He signed a certificate falsely declaring Donald Trump the winner of Wisconsin’s electoral votes — a state Trump lost by approximately 20,000 votes certified by Republican and Democratic election officials. That false certificate was transmitted to Congress to be counted alongside the real results. Hitt was indicted in June 2024. He has reportedly cooperated with state prosecutors and already settled civil litigation with Wisconsin plaintiffs.

Here’s a question worth sitting with: If a Democratic state party chairman had signed a false electoral certificate to make a losing Democratic candidate appear to have won — what would you call that? Would you call it protecting democracy? Or would you call it fraud?

A second question about Hitt’s cooperation: He has reportedly cooperated with prosecutors and already settled civil litigation. People generally cooperate and settle when they acknowledge their conduct was legally problematic. If the conduct were legitimate — if signing an alternate electoral certificate were a lawful political action — why cooperate and settle rather than defend it?
