Biographical Overview

John Arnold is a co-founder and Co-Chair of Arnold Ventures, a philanthropic and policy organization he founded with his wife Laura in 2006. Arnold made his fortune as a natural gas trader at Enron, where he was Vice President of Natural Gas Trading, and then as the founder of Centaurus Capital (later Centaurus Energy), a hedge fund focused on energy commodity markets that he ran from 2002 to 2012. He retired from hedge fund management at age 38 after building one of the most successful energy trading track records in history.

Through Arnold Ventures, Arnold has become one of the most influential policy philanthropists in the United States, funding criminal justice reform, public pension reform, and evidence-based policy research. He is also Chairman of Grid United, a company focused on building high-voltage transmission infrastructure for the energy transition. He joined the Meta board in 2024. He holds a B.A. in Mathematics and Economics from Vanderbilt University.
