May 12, 2021: During a House Oversight Committee hearing, Clyde stated: “Watching the TV footage of those who entered the Capitol and walked through Statuary Hall showed people in an orderly fashion staying between the stanchions and ropes taking videos and pictures. If you didn’t know the TV footage was a video from January the 6th, you would actually think it was a normal tourist visit.” He also denied there was an insurrection, calling it “a bold faced lie.”

Four months later, he told Congress: “If you didn’t know the TV footage was a video from January the 6th, you would actually think it was a normal tourist visit.” When shown photographs of himself in that moment — barricading the doors — he stood by the statement anyway. Here’s a question worth sitting with: If you personally barricaded a door against a mob — if you were there, in that moment, pushing furniture against a door because you were afraid — and then described it as a “normal tourist visit” four months later, what would you call that? What word would you use for saying something you know isn’t true?
