Voter Registration

How to Obtain Citizenship Proof

If you were born in the U.S., obtain a certified birth certificate from the vital records office in your birth state. If you were naturalized, obtain a replacement Certificate of Naturalization by filing Form N-565 with USCIS or request your A-File through a FOIA request. If you were born abroad to U.S. citizen parents, obtain a Certificate of Citizenship by filing Form N-600 with USCIS.

For US Citizens Abroad

U.S. citizens abroad can apply for a U.S. passport at U.S. consulates or embassies, which serves as proof of citizenship. Previous U.S. passports or naturalization certificates are also accepted if available.

Notes: Idaho requires proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration eligibility. A U.S. passport fulfills both photo ID and citizenship requirements. Naturalized citizens should update their driver’s license with DMV after name changes using their naturalization certificate.
